Artist Statement

My work is an exploration of the earth: the hues and textures of the ground beneath our feet, and the human imprint on it. In my paintings I aim to bring together geometry and archaeology, memory and meditation, architecture and the natural world.

The mineral makeup of my surroundings - abundant in resources and varying in composition – is an important element of my work, as I make my own pigments using raw materials of the land. Flowers, plants, clay, volcanic rock - these materials have elemental hues and an inherent sculptural quality. They produce a weathered, textural palette, while building an imperfect counterpoint to the clean lines and precision of dimensional forms. While using these materials, I let geometric gestures and the asymmetrical frame of my canvases unfold without demanding any specific result. I aim to let the work arrive in its truest form at each stage. To be able to do this is to accept a subconscious influence of geometry and let the work reveal itself. Without any singular attachment to an outcome, my work can live on its own and embody natural and timeless qualities.
